Why we should stop drinking artificial alkaline water?

What is alkaline water?

Alkaline water is water that’s less acidic than regular tap water. Alkaline water is water that has a higher pH level than tap water. 7 is a neutral pH. 0 being very acidic and 14 being very alkaline. The higher the pH level the more alkaline, The lower the pH level, the more acidic it is. This means alkaline water is rich in alkalizing compounds, including calcium, silica, potassium, magnesium, and bicarbonate.

We don’t believe in alkalized water through ionizer unless it is natural mineral water that’s alkalized because of the rich  natural mineral in them rather than the pH level per se.

Why is artificial alkaline water bad for you?

If we are healthy, our normal blood pH is slightly alkaline between 7.35 to 7.45 pH.  So it's a misconception that you can, by drinking an alkaline water, drastically affect the blood pH of the body. It doesn’t happen that way. The blood doesn’t draw its alkalinity from our water intake. Our bodies have a complex system of internal buffers and other chemical agents that alkalize or acidify different areas as needed. Far from helping, alkalized water can interfere with this process.

Manufacturers of ionizer claim that alkalized water through ionization, allowing water to interact with electrodes to split hydrogen ions from oxygen, influencing the pH of the water. Our body is a very complex machine, if all the body systems are functioning as they should be, our kidney works as the filtration system to maintain our body pH. Secretion of an acid or alkaline urine by the kidneys is one the most important mechanisms the body uses to maintain a constant body pH. Drinking alkaline water can impact our urine pH, interfere how our body alkalize or acidify in different areas as needed. Clinical studies have shown that patients on alkaline water , through their urinate test, demonstrated high level of pH, that’s very alkaline, 9 pH.  Normal urine is acidic with 5-6 pH, and it is important to kill off microbes. Some fluids in the body need to be acidic for a reason, in our bowel, urine and stomach.  To balance the microbes, and electrolytes in our body.

Here are some examples of mineral water pH level from popular brands:

  • Essentia guarantees 9.5 on the website (which is more alkaline).
  • Dasani ranges between 5.0-7.0 (which is less alkaline or neutral).
  • Aquafina ranges between 5.5-7.0 (which is less alkaline or neutral).
  • Smartwater has a pH of about 7.0 (which is neutral).
  • Evian has a pH of 7.2 (which is more alkaline).

First, a little chemistry: A pH level measures how acid or alkaline something is. A pH of 0 is totally acidic, while a pH of 14 is completely alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral. Those levels vary throughout your body. Your blood is slightly alkaline, with a pH between 7.35 and 7.45. Your stomachis very acidic, with a pH of 3.5 or below, so it can break down food. And your urine changes, depending on what you eat -- that's how your body keeps the level in your blood steady.

The alkaline water claims to help your body maintain its blood pH level. In fact, nothing you eat is going to substantially change the pH of your blood. Your body works to keep that level constant.

But the foods you're supposed to eat on the alkaline diet are good for you and will support a healthy weight loss: lots of fruits and vegetables, and lots of water. Avoiding sugar, alcohol, and processed foods is healthy weight-loss advice, too.

Balance diet is the key to health, our body won't take what it doesn't need. Our body  will regulate both acidic and alkaline foods and beverages. 8 glasses of plain drinking water daily does a great job keeping our body hydrated.
